Will P-square ever come back again?... Well… that’s a tough question. Considering the events that surrounded their separation, accepting that the once-celebrated twin duo may never come back together is a no-brainer. Before diving into the florid details about their separation, the story of how the now-defunct group was formed is worth telling. Peter and Paul Okoye began their musical career in St. Murumba Catholic school in Jos, Plateau State Nigeria. The Okoye brothers loved singing, dancing, and mimicking songs by MC Hammer, Bobby Brown, and Michael Jackson. As time went by, they formed an a cappella quartet with three friends, identified as M Clef, Michael and Melvin. Drawing inspiration from their music idol Michael Jackson, they began started break dancing and formed another group called "Smooth Criminals" in 1997. Their artistic talent and precise dance routine soon made them household names in the city of Jos, where they performed at school functions and other occasions. In 1999, Peter and Paul returned to music school to learn how to play some instruments. That same year, they were accepted into the University of Abuja to study Business Administration. The “Smooth Criminals,” as they called it, disbanded when its members left to various other universities. Subsequently, Peter and Paul formed their own group, variously called "Double P", "P&P", and "Da Pees", until they eventually settled on the brand name "P Square". After releasing their debut album in 2003, P-Square began gaining immense popularity. Over the next decade, the dynamic twin duo managed to become one of the most successful Nigerian musicians, with fans all over the world. For many years, the two were the richest of all musicians in the country, raking money from their tours and music sales.
So how did they break up?
In 2016, the Psquare brothers first broke up supposedly over a disagreement about the role of their manager and elder brother, Jude Okoye, in their affairs. They were able to patch things up and release two new songs together in 2017. However, that reconciliation was short-lived, as Peter ultimately sent a termination letter requesting to part ways with his brother once again, claiming that his brother was being uncooperative. Paul admitted that he took his brother’s exit from their group to heart. For months, he could not do anything, as he felt really low. Nevertheless, Paul has since bounced back and returned to his normal state. If you are wondering why Peter first called it quits, the short answer is that he simply decided that he no longer wanted to be in a group with his brother. The now-renamed Mr P outlined his reasons for leaving the group in several interviews. Allegedly, both his twin brother Paul and their older brother Jude behaved inappropriately towards him; in fact, Peter’s wife and kids were not left out of the messy saga. Peter accused his brothers of stirring up all kinds of drama and even threatening the safety of his own family. A video showing all three brothers fighting in public was released by Linda Ikeji that same year.
In spite of this, their lawyer, Festus Keyamo, blamed the incident on “too much emotion and passion.” Other than that, there is nothing much known about the conflict and its causes. Even though quite some time has passed, it is evident that P-Square is not likely to exist anymore. Overall, it seemed like their breakup had been brewing itself for a long... long time and 2017 was the year when everything fell apart. Neither of the brothers feels like talking about this anymore, so it would be best if we leave it alone as well. At this point, if you are a P-square fan, here's my advice for you: Move on.
