How to Make A DIY Face Mask Without Sewing

While vaccines are still being rolled out continuously worldwide, the dangers of the COVID-19 virus also continue to pose threats to the global population. This is the reason why face masks remain to be a necessity. Aside from medical-grade face masks, many people are also using fabric face masks. Some of them are interested to learn how to make a mask without sewing.

But, before you proceed to make your mask, there are a few essential things you need to know first.

Do Fabric Face Masks Offer Protection from the Virus?

Experts reported that face masks slow down the spread of the coronavirus. However, this is not as simple as it sounds. This also works best if everyone wears them in areas where it is challenging to observe social distancing, such as pharmacies and grocery stores. However, fabric face masks might not be as effective as those approved by the experts, such as N-95 respirators or surgical masks. It is also important to observe social distancing through staying at home if possible and follow all recommendations from healthcare professionals.

What is the Best Type of Fabric for Face Masks?

Tightly woven and 100% cotton is the best type of fabric for homemade face masks. Bandanas or other fabrics from woven shirts, curtains, pillowcases, or whatever is available at home can be used. You can also use T-shirts, but this is not the top option due to the knit fabric.

It is also important to make sure that the mask is snug enough on your face. Rubber bands or hair ties can be used for securing them on your ears. You can also tie ribbon, string, or shoelaces around the back of the head to make it more comfortable.

Here is an easy and quick tutorial on how to make your no-sew face masks at home with no need to shop for new supplies:

  1. Cut a cotton fabric in square shape measuring 22" x 22" or layout a bandana.
  2. An optional step is putting a flat coffee filter in the middle of the square.
  3. Fold in the bottom and top to the middle.
  4. Another optional step is to put a paper clip, twist tie, or any similar metal piece close on the upper portion.
  5. Fold bottom and top into the middle.
  6. Fold in the sides to the middle and place the ties at the crease you folded. You can loop hair ties or rubber bands around the fabric. If you are using string or shoelaces, you can put the string's centre in the folded crease then pull tight the straps.
  7. Tuck the fabric's one end to the other.
  8. Lift your mask to your face so you can secure the straps. If you are using rubber bands or hair ties, loop these over each of your ears. For string or shoelaces, tie these at the back of your head.
  9. Make necessary adjustments to ensure that your nose and mouth are completely and securely covered.
