For deleting President Buhari’s tweet and suspending his account for 12 hours, Nigeria has suspended, indefinitely, the operations of Twitter in the country. The move comes days after the Nigerian president was accused of inciting violence with his tweets.
While addressing issues of insecurity in the Southeastern part of the country, Buhari threatened to treat those promoting insurrection “in the language the understand”, quickly drawing an outrage from Nigerians. Although Twitter initially insisted Buhari’s tweets did not violate its rules, it later backtracked and removed the presidents tweet. It is still not clear how the suspension will work, as Twitter’s website was still accessible as at the time of this report.
