Sunday Igboho 'on the run' after hour-long gun duel between his men and DSS operatives

In the early hours of 1st July 2021, the Department of State Security Services (DSS) raided the residence of a popular Yoruba Nation secessionist group leader, Mr Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho, after receiving intel that he had amassed firearms at his base.

According to a statement released by DSS spokesman, Dr Peter Afunanya, there was a gun duel that lasted for an hour between the security operatives and the armed men found at Igboho's residence.

Afunanya, while noting that the hot period of bullets exchange granted Sunday Igboho a window of escape, said he believed that Mr Sunday is currently on the run.

"The gun duel which lasted for an hour offered Igboho the chance to escape. Sunday Adeyemo, aka Sunday Igboho, is now on the run", Afunanya said, "Igboho may run as far as he can...He might have attacked security operatives as his strength carried him. But this will be the end of his shenanigans"

In addition, he mentioned that the DSS team was first attacked by nine gunmen. All were armed with AK-47 guns except for three who had Pump-Action rifles instead.

During the attack, two of these men were shot, and the rest were apprehended. All this took place in Soka, Ibadan, Oyo State.

Following up with the aforementioned events, Mr Sunday, in an interview with BBC Pidgin, made it known that his planned rally on Saturday in Lagos will no longer hold.

He claimed that two of his men were killed and that he suffered severe damages to his properties. Meanwhile, the Lagos State Police has announced that there would be no form rally in Lagos on Saturday.

The question remains if Mr Igboho will still walk the streets like a common man, as it goes against the Firearms Act to own any firearm without proper licensing.

Dr Peter noted that some of the recovered rifles were stolen from the Nigeria Customs and Immigration forces.

He added that Igboho will no longer have a place to hide and that the law will catch up with him soon.
