How to Check BVN (Bank Verification Number) in Nigeria

Since the Central Bank of Nigeria developed a single Biometric Identification System in 2014, people have been curious to retrieve or check their BVN or Bank Verification Numbers. Nigerians who own a bank account are assigned a unique number with eleven digits. Banks in Nigeria require this code for new clients to be registered in their systems.

Even if you have several bank accounts, only a single Bank Verification Number will represent all of them. All financial information you have will also be associated with your BVN. Hence, it is essential to know how to check BVN in Nigeria.

What is BVN?

As stated earlier, BVN or Bank Verification Number is the biometric identification system that the Central Bank of Nigeria has established together with the NIBSS or Nigerian Interbank Settlement System to reduce the number of illegal or fraudulent banking transactions in the country. The BVN helps the CBN in identifying fraudsters. It also helps them track down how much money a particular person holds.

It doesn't matter how many bank accounts a person may have because the BVN will remain in the system across all of their accounts. It is compulsory for all Nigerians with bank accounts to have their BVN pin.

You don't need an internet connection to check your BVN using your mobile phone, although a fee will be charged for each transaction you make via your phone provider.
