Ex-Finance Minister Mrs Kemi Adeosun, who voluntarily resigned from her office in 2018, was cleared by a Federal High Court in Abuja.
The Judge, Justice Taiwo Taiwo, stressed that Mrs Adeosun did not need an NYSC exemption certificate to contest or resume any political office in Nigeria.
According to the Judge, Mrs Kemi was a British citizen during her eligibility period. She returned to Nigeria when she was over 30 years old and was ineligible to go for service. He cautioned that if Kemi had gone for service under a false age, she would have committed a grave offence against the constitution.
Justice Taiwo noted that going for the offices of Governor of a state, member of House of Assembly, Minister of Federal Executive Council, member of the National Assembly, and other political offices does not require a first degree or an NYSC certificate to be eligible. He noted that when Mrs Adeosun returned to Nigeria in 2003, she was already ineligible for service.
In reaction to the news, the former finance minister expressed that she had always held the same opinion as the verdict given by Justice Taiwo.
Adeosun maintained that the victory was not a personal victory but for all Nigerians in Diaspora under similar conditions. She thanked her lawyer, Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN), and all her well-wishers for their prayers and support.
She added that she would take appropriate steps to guard and restore her reputation with time.
