The Federal Government has denied trying to stop Nigerians from using Twitter.
In Lagos, a counsel to the government told the Federal High Court that many Nigerians are still using the social media platform despite its ban.
Although Federal Government recently banned Twitter a few days after President Muhammadu Buhari's tweet was deleted, it claimed that it was not aware of the deletion. The government also accused the micro-blogging platform of providing IPOB Leader Nnamdi Kanu with a ground to incite violence in the country.
In a counter-affidavit deposed by the Attorney-General Abubakar Malami and the Federal Government against an existing motion, they claimed that the human rights of Nigerians have not been trampled upon.
A part of it read, "The applicant and the class he seeks to represent can still operate those Twitter accounts from anywhere in the world and even from Nigeria. Nigerians are still tweeting, even at this moment as the ban on Twitter is not aimed at intimidating Nigerians or an infringement on the rights of Nigerians to express their opinion."
FG also told the court that Nigerians are free to use alternatives like Facebook, TikTok, WhatsApp, etc.
In addition, Nigerians were advised to direct their anger at Twitter for not complying with Nigeria's law, leading to their suspension.
